Markets & Food Halls in the City of London

London is renowned for having some of the most historic and prestigious markets in the world. Whether it’s tourists flocking to Borough Market or the sprawling Portobello Road Market, it’s basically mandatory to visit markets around the city.

As explorers of the Square Mile, we know that some of the best options are in the City of London, so we’ve put together a list to make sure you don’t miss out.

BOXHALL City

This is the newest food hall in the City, and variety is the name of the game. They have 14 offerings that cover the gamut, so no matter who you bring they’ll find something to suit the strictest dietary requirements or the fussiest tastes.

We attended opening day and were shocked at how well-oiled a machine it was already, with little wait for food or seating. Located literally right next to the exit of Liverpool Street Station and open from 7am to midnight, it’s certainly one of the most versatile dining options in all of London.

The Royal Exchange

London is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, from the humble beginnings of Roman Londinium through the Industrial Revolution to modern times, and nothing represents that quite like The Royal Exchange.

It started as an open-air farmer’s market where people would bring their modest farmyard goods, and now it’s one of the most elegant and luxurious shopping locales in Europe, with retailers like Fortnums and their legendary afternoon teas. And as a lovely new development: they’re now open on weekends!

Urban Food Court

One of the busiest places to visit in the City for lunch, if you’re looking for something truly filling, this might just be your number one place. Whether it’s a huge serving of Chinese chicken and rice or an American burger with a near-endless box of fries, they’ve got you sorted for an easy grab-and-go.

They also have Thai and Italian cuisine, and if you’re in need of specific recommendations, we’ve tried every type of cuisine they offer.

Petticoat Lane

Established in 1650, this open street market still maintains that communal feel from centuries ago. There’s a huge selection of local vendors, community events and of course, some of the best bang for your buck (or pound as it may be) meals around.

There’s Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, but one of our absolute favourite places in the City is Eye Falafel, incredibly tasty, and incredibly affordable.

Leadenhall Market

Do you want historic? How does the 14th century sound? Leadenhall Market is one of the icons of London’s storied history, and the model for pop culture icons like Willy Wonka, Harry Potter and Mario Kart.

They’ve got dining options, and of course, a few very nice pubs including the lovely Lamb Tavern. But the best reason to visit is for the fantastic aesthetic, pop-up community markets and cultural events like the annual Pancake Race and Christmas Tree lighting.

Kerb Fleet Place

This is one of my favourite places to grab lunch in the Square Mile – with an unfortunate catch! Located just moments away from the enigmatic City Thameslink is Kerb’s market of ever-changing food trucks.

They always make sure to keep things fresh each week, with a focus on small and independent vendors and they even host themed days like all women-run businesses. But the downside? It’s only available on Tuesdays to Thursdays during lunch, so plan accordingly.

Eataly

What if you took Italy, scaled it down to the size of a pizza and plonked it right next to Liverpool Street Station? Then you’d have Eataly, which combines both a market and a food hall.

They have over 11 restaurants and stalls, covering pizza, pasta, pastries, gelato, wine and of course an Aperol Spritz. On the market side, you can pick up fresh Italian bread, cheese & oil so you can take Italy home with you.

Smithfield Market

As an honourable mention, we thought we’d shout out Smithfield Market, with over 800 years of service coming to an end, it’s worth remembering how important they are to London’s history.

While anyone can visit and shop there, they’re a wholesale market, meaning they help provide fresh produce to restaurants around London and are perhaps more suited to a 5am visit by working chefs than a lunchtime excursion.
