Janáček’s The Excursions of Mr Brouček is a riotous, satirical opera unlike any other – and the London Symphony Orchestra is bringing it to life in concert under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle.
The story follows the beer-loving, responsibility-shirking landlord Brouček as he stumbles through fantastical voyages to the moon and back to 15th-century Prague. With each journey, he expects utopia – but instead finds confusion, rejection, and the limits of his own self-importance. Despite his blunders, Brouček returns home unscathed and deluded, boasting of his imaginary heroism.
Full of biting humour, colourful orchestrations, and sharply-drawn characters, this opera is both a comic escapade and a clever critique of nationalism and artistic pretension. Featuring Peter Hoare as the hapless anti-hero, these two concert performances promise sharp wit, surreal adventures – and perhaps a sausage or two.
