Archives on Show: The Africa Centre at The London Archives

Book now

Celebrate the Africa Centre and discover their archives at this special document display

Discover a selection of archival material tracing the history of The Africa Centre, a London-based charity established in 1961 that supports and connects Africa and its diaspora through art, culture, heritage, and debate.

The Centre had its very own lecture hall, library, restaurant, nightclub and radio show hosting legendary political figures and cultural icons like Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Walter Rodney, Wala Danga, Sonia Boyce and more.

These records offer a clear look at the Centre’s founding, its programming, and its role as a space for discussion, creativity, and cultural exchange.

What to expect

  • Curated display of archival material - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace
  • Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display
  • Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of The London Archives team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items
  • In addition to browsing the material, you'll also be able to view the current display in the Information Area "Spotlight on The Africa Centre" (on show until 2 July).

Time: 1 & 2pm Friday 12 June.

Tickets: You must reserve a spot in advance.

The London Archives is located in Clerkenwell (between Farringdon and Angel), just outside the boundary of The City of London.
