The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers has announced its new exhibition, ‘Illusion - the Inquisitive Eye’, which will be held at the magnificent Painters’ Hall in the City of London.
The exhibition is a unique opportunity to experience a collection of outstanding works selected exclusively from the membership of the livery company – highlighting an eclectic mix of painters, sculptors, designers, decorators and craftspeople, whose works range across a wide variety of contemporary practice and traditional discipline.
There will also be a programme of related talks, workshops and demonstrations to run in parallel with the exhibition, details of which will be released closer to the time.
About the exhibition
United in their pursuit of excellence, the exhibitors have fashioned their particular responses to the theme of ‘Illusion’, a component of the creative process familiar to all those engaged in artistic production. They make common ground with the age-old ‘mysteries’ of the Painter-Stainers’ art, whose professional members have engaged so skilfully, through the years, in their ‘deceptions of the eye’.
This year, the show is curated by artists Tim Wright and Tuesday Riddell, both members of the Livery. In addition, the Company is especially pleased to announce the participation of a guest curator, the actor and artist, Timothy Spall, who has agreed to open the exhibition and share his thoughts about the work, the Company and its special relationship with the City.
About The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers
The Painter-Stainers are one of the oldest Livery Companies and can trace their existence back to the latter half of the thirteenth century and possibly earlier. The intimate relationship with the City of London continues and is expressed in charitable work with schools and colleges and various engagements with the visual arts. The history of the Company will be reflected in a small, subsidiary exhibition of paintings, documents and objects, which offer an intriguing insight into the past.
