Cart Marking Ceremony

More details

Come and watch the annual Cart Marking Ceremony - a wonderfully quirky City tradition led by a City Livery Company. Free to watch and spectators are welcome. Taking place in Guildhall Yard on Saturday 20 July, 10.00am – 3.30pm.

A fun event for all the family and transport enthusiasts. You'll see a parade of over 40 old and new vehicles in Guildhall Yard including handcarts and horse-drawn carriages, steam engines and modern day marvels.

This historic ceremony dates back over 500 years, and is the origin of vehicle licencing. The modern day ceremony celebrates transport through the ages. As each vehicle is presented for marking, a commentator will explain its history and relevance today. Each vehicle will be marked with a red-hot iron by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, and representatives of the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

No booking required - just turn up.
